Matt grows some pretty impressive plants in the stuff. Look in the gallery, several of the plant tank shots are colorquartz.

It is inert so you'll have to fertilze the water column or substrate if you wish.

The plus side is that there is no better looking media, in my opinion, for a planted tank than the black color quartz. It makes the plants colors pop plus the price is very affordable in comparison to some of the other "planted tank" substrate media out there.

I've used eco complete and a couple others and IMHO I believe the planted tank substrates promote algae growth, especially hair algae.

Chime in Matt and give us the low down.

Thinking about putting it in my 125, how much you think I would need and how much does it cost? And where would I get the stuff?

The only Ohio distributor is up in Cleveland. It is probably close to $30 for 50 lbs with delivery charges and I think I used 150 -200 lbs in my 75g. Here is a nice substrate calculator that should help you determine how much sand you will need for you tank. 3" is a decent depth.

Flourite Black sand would probably work just as well but I imagine it will be more expensive ;)
